…it’s been a shitty week for death.
I usually write up a “dead” post every time someone goes, but so many people passed away this week that I’m just doing one big post.
First up, Elmer Lynn Hauldren (AKA The Empire Carpets Man) died at 89.
Also this week, songstress Phoebe Snow died at 60.
Punk rock pioneer Poly Styrene of X-Ray Spex (AKA Marianne Joan Elliott-Said) died at 53.
And TV on the Radio’s Gerard Smith lost his battle with lung cancer at the young age of 36.
It’s been a week of a hell of a lot of loss, especially for the music industry. But, hey, at least we have the Royal Wedding to look forward to, right?
The week ain’t over,
…recently did a poster for Billy West’s upcoming appearance at Packrat Comics in Hilliard, Ohio.
Billy’s appearance is on May 7th, which is also known throughout the geek world as “Free Comic Book Day.” (Note: Nicholas Brendon of “Buffy” fame will be making an appearance at Packrat that day as well.)
Still waiting for Free Beer Day,
…but now in computer-generated 3D.
I still laugh out loud at those cartoons,
…hijacked my cell phone at a party last weekend. When I finally got it back, my phone was… well, different.
The first menu page hadn’t changed:
The second menu page, however, had a bunch of wonderful new apps including “The Holy Bible,” “Boy Ahoy” and “FOX Sports” among others. (Note: The first three apps in the top left were already there.)
The third menu page was filled with a bunch of pro-Republican, Justin Bieber and vegan apps. Oh, and one about periods. I’m still trying to figure out which one of these is the scariest.
The fourth menu page was… sigh, you get the idea.
My calendar was also hacked. The next day, for an entire hour, I was scheduled to eat my grandma’s creamy potato chowder.
Every day thereafter, and I mean literally every day thereafter, at 4:00 AM (with an alarm that was scheduled to go off) I would be reminded that I have AIDS.
On September 11th I would be reminded to “never forget.”
And on Sunday, October 30th, which also just happens to be our wedding day, I was scheduled to “kiss happiness goodbye” in Chicago.
With friends like these,
…who made it to our shower last Saturday! It was great seeing everyone. And a special thanks to Mom and Aunt Robin for throwing it together so quickly.
Love all you guys!
Just like old times,
…recently did artwork for the CD cover of “La Tortuga” from Milwaukee’s own Afro-Cuban/Latin jazz band De La Buena.
The music’s just as great as the artwork,
He speaks the truth,
Back when I was living in Columbus, Ohio my friends and I started a quote wall. Whenever a bit of brilliance (or otherwise) poured out of someone’s mouth, somebody would yell “Quote!” thus nominating it for Quote Board status. The quote then had to be seconded by someone (it almost always was), and then it would be written down to be forever immortalized on the Quote Board.
This is the modern day equivalent of that classic piece of my past.
Justin: “Do you like farts?”
Kevin: “I do. I could eat a fart.”
– Kevin Vogel (after many beers… and some whiskey), 4/23/11
I don’t think he was serious… I hope,
…French Roast (Organic Fair Trade)!
Back in the swing of things on Monday.
The town that made a loser out of me,
