In 2013, we spent it together in Budapest.

In 2014, we spent the day with our friend Rebecca in Brussels.

Last year, we Valentine’d it up with Rebecca and her husband Harry in Istanbul.

And this year, we spent it in America. Chicago, to be exact.

Valentine's Day 2016 with KB and Emily!

Wonder where we’ll spend Valentine’s Day 2017,

While in Hungary, KB, Emily and I visited the House of Hungarian Wines at Buda Castle in Budapest.

We each decided to do a prix fixe tasting of seven different wines (three whites, three reds, and a dessert wine), but were slightly caught off guard by the price when we realized each tasting cost around $40 each.

That price might be appropriate for Napa or Sonoma, but for Hungary (a country that isn’t even on the Euro yet, and currently has a 225-to-1 forint-to-dollar exchange rate) it was pretty steep.

Until we realized that by each “tasting” they meant “nearly full pour.” Needless to say, we were there quite awhile.

The night started off well with glass #1.

And the warmth began to set in with glass #2.

We chilled out with glass #3.

But the paranoia started to set in with glass #4.

Which created the prankster antics of glass #5.

Which lead to the violence of glass #6.

But in the end, like most people, we all fell in love with each other by glass #7.

The Berlin/Budapest Haul!

If you know me, you know I have a history of “borrowing” beer glasses from bars.

Now, I admit, stealing is wrong. But in my defense, I used to be much worse. (To be read: I’m trying to get better.) In the past, when I would go out of the country on a trip, it was not uncommon for me to return with six or seven steins.

But on our past trip to Berlin and Budapest, I returned with two. Small steps, right?

The Dreher on the left is from a bar in Budapest. The Berliner Pilsner on the right is from our hotel bar in Berlin.

The one on the left was stolen, but the one on the right was given to me as a gift from our bartender on our last night there. She probably figured we had spent enough money there over the past ten days to warrant a free gift.

Both made it back safely. And soon they will be filled with a delicious IPA.

This is turning into a beer blog… or a cry for help,
