A couple weeks back, KB and I had the opportunity to check out a band I’ve been a fan of for quite some time now: Bedouin Soundclash. The Toronto-based trio was in Los Angeles in support of their newest album, “Light the Horizon,” which was released on June 7th on Nat Geo Records. The album marks their fourth full-length release since their 2001 debut album “Root Fire.”

While most people are probably more familiar with their sophomore album “Sounding a Mosaic” (and its single “When the Night Feels My Song”), each of Bedouin’s albums are quality both in songwriting and musicianship. “Light the Horizon” is no different.

By dabbling in the genres of reggae, punk and soul, “Light the Horizon” blends what Bedouin is known for with a few new surprises. Sekou Lumumba’s drums and Eon Sinclair’s bass come together to serve as the perfect backdrop for Jay Malinowski’s vocals and lead guitar, yet each piece of the trio stands out on their own, both on the new album and in live performance. As a listener, it’s obvious that each of these guys are not only friends but are also doing what they love for a living. Together, Bedouin Soundclash sounds and feels like a family.

Each of the ten new tracks on “Light the Horizon” stand alone on their own, but more importantly they each serve as an important piece of the whole of the album. My favorite track, “Brutal Hearts,” is a duet between Malinowski and songstress Coeur de pirate (AKA Beatrice Martin) over an amazing bit of string orchestration.

Much of Bedouin Soundclash’s tour is now behind them, but if you live in Minneapolis (6/22 at Cedar Cultural Center), Chicago (6/23 at Subterranean) or Detroit (6/24 at Shelter) you still have a chance to catch them this week.

The show KB and I saw here in town at Hotel Cafe was a brief performance (they played for a half hour or so) held exclusively for press, but if it was any indication of what a full-fledged show is like you’re in for a treat. I’m not sure if they’ve been doing this regularly at their live performances, but when we saw them they led off their show-closer “When the Night Feels My Song” with a very brief cover of Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros’ “Johnny Appleseed.” A great band of today giving a nod to a great band of yesterday. You can’t ask for better than that.

Waiting for a fifth full-length,

A few months ago I had the pleasure of attending the lucha libre/burlesque/comedy variety show that is Lucha VaVOOM. Remember?

Well, Lucha VaVOOM returns to Los Angeles this week with two performances at the Mayan on October 27th and 28th. Don’t live in Los Angeles and still want to see the show? You might be in luck. After Lucha’s two-night stint here, the gang is hitting the road for a handful of out-of-town dates.

Check ’em:

10/31:  San Francisco, CA @ Filmore
11/04:  Philadelphia, PA @ Electric Factory
11/06:  Asbury Park, NJ @ Convention Hall
11/08:  Boston, MA @ Royal Boston
11/09:  New York, NY @ Webster Hall
11/11:  Chicago, IL @ Park West

If you’re anywhere near any of those venues on those dates do yourself a favor and go. You’ll be glad you did. Why? Because Lucha VaVOOM has tiny bits of everything that makes life so great: wrestling, nudity and comedy.

Don’t believe me? Check it out for yourself.

I told you!

So if you’re in L.A. this week, come on out and buy me a beer. Or go to one of the other dates in another city and buy someone who looks like me a beer. Just look for the nearest bald white guy wearing dark-rimmed glasses. There’s a billion of us out there.
